Arco (2025) Full Movie Recap | Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The film opens in the year 2932. A young boy named Arco (Juliano Krue Valdi) watches as his parents (Roeg Sutherland and America Ferrera) and older sister return home after using their rainbow flight suits, which also have the ability to travel through time. Arco wants to use the suits to fly and see dinosaurs, but since he is under the age of 12, his parents forbid him from doing so.

At night, Arco sneaks out and grabs his sister’s flight suit. He initially plummets down below, as the homes in this century are atop high pillars in the sky, but he eventually gets the hang of it and starts flying. A storm breaks out, messing with the sun reflecting off the diamond in the suit, as it is the sunlight that allows the suit to work properly. Arco flies fast enough to break through time.

In the year 2075, a girl named Iris (Romy Fay) lives with her baby brother Peter. Their parents (Mark Ruffalo and Natalie Portman) are away at work most of the time, leaving their kids in the care of a robot named Mikki (voiced by both Ruffalo and Portman). As a result, Iris often tends to feel alone. Her closest friend is a boy at school named Clifford, who has a secret crush on her.

Iris sees Arco’s flight suit produce a rainbow across the sky. She follows it and finds Arco having crash-landed in the woods. As she gets him up on his feet, three brothers – Dougie (Will Ferrell), Stewie (Andy Samberg), and Frankie (Flea) – notice what happened and obsessively pursue Arco, as they had previously seen a rainbow flight suit in action 20 years earlier, but nobody believed them. The kids are gone, but the brothers find the diamond from Arco’s suit and recover it.

Iris brings Arco home to tend to a head injury, and to fix a tear in the suit. Since Arco is from the future, Mikki’s attempts to track him in its database causes the robot to shut down. Maintenance robots arrive at the house to reset Mikki. Although he initially is hesitant to tell Iris the truth about his situation, Arco tells her where he came from so that she can help him get back in the sky. Meanwhile, back in the future, Arco’s family discovers he is missing, and they head off to find him.

Arco and Iris bond as she learns things about him like how he can communicate with birds. She feels sad that he has to go, but she helps him recreate the circumstances of his last flight (raining while it’s sunny) by using sprinklers. Arco manages to gain some flight, but he is unable to teleport because he is missing the diamond. The brothers continue to follow Arco and Iris to gather proof of the flight suit’s capabilities.

Iris gets in touch with her parents to try and help Arco, but when she mentions the fact that he’s from the future, they think she is just making up stories. Iris expresses her frustration towards her parents because of their frequent absences.

The town starts to endure raging forest fires, which would prevent Arco from being able to get home. Iris takes Peter and flees with Arco as they are pursued by the brothers, along with Clifford. They make it to a factory filled with other bots like Mikki, which Clifford sets off to get the brothers away from them. Eventually, the brothers prove they are not antagonistic and just wanted proof that the rainbow flight suits were real. They give Arco his diamond back. Everybody gets out of the factory as the fire spreads, and the houses put up bubble shields to protect themselves. Mikki manages to recover Arco, Iris, and Peter, and brings them to find shelter in a cave.

Iris wakes up to find that Mikki has created drawings on the cave walls of herself with Arco and Peter. She sees that Mikki is heavily damaged from the fires and is starting to shut down for good. Arco’s suit has also been burned. However, Arco takes Iris and Peter, as they follow an owl who leads them out of the cave.

The kids make it outside and see three rainbows descending down on them. It is Arco’s family, but he is heartbroken to find that his parents have become elderly, and his sister is now an adult woman. They explain that they spend decades trying to find him, but it wasn’t until they saw Mikki’s cave drawings that they were able to pinpoint his exact location and time. Arco says goodbye to Iris, who kisses his cheek. He rejoins his family as they fly back home.

A photo collage in Iris’s home shows pictures throughout the years. Her and Peter’s parents returned home to spend more time with them, and they maintained a friendship with the brothers and Clifford. Further pictures show Iris graduating college, along with other drawings she made of the houses in the future as Arco described to them. The last thing we see is another rainbow outside Iris’s home.[wide]
